Kept Walking by Accident
by Claire Stilwell

I wanted to live in the land of bad decisions. In order to live in the land of bad decisions, you have to make some bad decisions.

I really couldn’t wait to live in the land of bad decisions, especially after reading about it on Dan Schwartz’s blog. I imagined myself getting up one morning, and deciding to do something crazy, or at least seriously lacking in common sense, and then probably saying the F word later, when I’m telling all my friends the story. The thing is, though, I seem to have ended up here sort of by accident, without any bad-decision satisfaction. I mean, there are some trips to the land of bad decisions that you make like you fell asleep behind the wheel and ended up in a field, who knows where, and who knows how. You just end up stuck in the middle of all the consequences, sort of by surprise.

When I say stuck in the consequences, I really mean floating, because that’s what I’m doing right now. You see, the thing is, we don’t have tides in the prairies. Sure, wheat fields can roll back and forth in the wind, but they never actually creep closer to you and grab your ankles and they definitely don’t drag you away. So I didn’t even know, when I went for a walk on the beach, and just kept walking, even when the water started lapping at my toes, my shins, and then my knees, that I was headed to the land of bad decisions. But now that I’m salty and wet and trying to remember how to float like a starfish, I’m pretty sure that I’m here, living in the land of bad decisions. And I guess I wanted it. So it’s cool. Actually, it’s pretty f--king cold.
